Subatomic Particles and Periodic Properties
I have 11 protons, 11 electrons, and 12 Neutrons. There are 13 known isotopes of Sodium but 23 Na is the only stable one and the atomic mass is 22.98977 amu. My atomic radius is 186pm, my first ionization energy is 495.8 kJ mol-1, my second energy level is 4562.4 kJ mol-1, and my third is 6912.2 kJ mol-1. My electronegativity is .93 and my electron affinity is 52.868 kJ mol-1.
My Chemical Property
I may be awesome but I have a lot of reactions with other substances. When I come in contact with Oxygen I become a compound called Sodium Oxide. Water has probably the greatest effect on me, when I make contact with water heat is produced, this is called an exothermic reaction. Sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas are formed when sodium comes in contact with water so the heat produced sets off a fire. When I react with ammonia sodium cyanide (NaCN) and hydrogen gas are formed. I react to a lot of things but thats alright, they just make me cooler.
My Physical Property
At room temperature I am found in the form of a solid metallic substance but I'm very soft to touch. When I'm not exposed to air I can be silvery-white in color and very bright and shiny. When I'm exposed to air however I turn gray and become very dull. My boiling point and melting point are pretty high, I boil at 883°C and melt at 97.72° C. One of my many skill is being a great conductor of electricity. So yeah I'm pretty awesome.
My Life Story
In medieval times I was used in a compound as a headache remedy and through out history I have been used in compounds to make salt, soap, textiles and pickle foods. It was not until 1807 that I was finally isolated as a single element by Humphry Davy. To isolate me by myself Davy sent an electric current through molten sodium hydroxide. As a compound I have many uses but as a single element I am very limited.
